Holiday Cheer For Families In Need

Child’s Play Learning Center is holding a Holiday Cheer Drive to collect items for local families in need.  Everything we collect will be taken to the Sheboygan County Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) to be distributed to local families who need a little help this holiday season.

We are collecting much more than food this year!  We need your help to provide a wide variety of things for families struggling to have safe, warm winters this year.  As you are out shopping, please consider throwing another bottle of shampoo in your cart or maybe an extra set of mittens.

The following items are suggestions for your shopping trips:

  • Non-perishable Food Items
  • Baby Care Items – diapers, wipes, creams, small toys, bibs, etc.
  • Personal Hygiene Supplies – soaps, toothbrushes, toothpastes, washclothes, etc. • Versatile small gifts for children – crayons, coloring books, playdough, etc.
  • Cold-weather accessories – Hats, mittens, socks, scarves

The collection box will be located in the front hallway, near the sign-in station.  Consider using this opportunity to teach your children the spirit of giving without receiving a gift in return…at least not something they can see. Adding just a couple of extra dollars to your grocery cart will mean a lot to another family.   We will be collecting for Holiday Cheer for Families In Need through December 7.   Thank you for participating in this worthy effort.

Making Spirits Bright

If you are looking for something to do with your family to celebrate in a new way, the Sheboygan Rotary Clubs have designed an amazing Christmas light show in Evergreen Park in Sheboygan called Making Spirits Bright. This neat drive-through experience will be open EVERY DAY this weekend through Sunday 12/16/12 from 5:00 – 9:00.

Admission is non-perishable food or personal care items to be donated to the Sheboygan County Food Bank. If you like the show, the clubs would also appreciate cash donations to make it even bigger and better next year. For the full calendar including the activities at the Quarry View Shelter, click here. Be sure to tune your radio to FM 89.1 and listen and watch the show as it comes alive.

Poinsettia and Wreath Sale Pick-Up

All poinsettias and wreaths purchased through our Caan’s fundraiser will be available for pick-up on Tuesday, December 4 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Please plan to pick-up your orders!

4-Year-Old Kindergarten Informational Meeting

Did you know that Child’s Play offers a 4K program comparable to all other local schools in our area, but without the transportation, shift in routines and tough transitions?

You have the option to keep your Little Learner at Child’s Play for one more year, while ensuring they are prepared for Kindergarten. Just think – you can keep them in an environment they know, with nurturing teachers who will make sure they are prepared for kindergarten while maintaining a stable routine with plenty of play and rest!

In January, we will be holding an 4K Informational Meeting. We will announce the date and details in the January 2013 Newsletter.  Miss Kim will provide an overview of the Child’s Play 4K program, show you the classroom and answer your questions. If you know of anyone looking at 4K options for thier child, please share this information and let us know if we should reach out to them directly.

Classroom of the Month:  The Little Learners / 4K
Teacher :  Miss Kim Location: In the “Great Room”
Miss Kim’s Education & Experience:  Bachelor’s degree from Silver Lake College in Middle Childhood Early Adolescence, K-8 and a minor in English.  She has worked at Child’s Play for 14 years with a short hiatus while she finished her degree.

Main Objectives of the Little Learners Classroom

  • To prepare students for kindergarten in a loving, caring and safe environment.
  • To encourage students to grow socially and emotionally, including appropriate experession of emotions, ability to manage aggression and stress, and focused participation in activities.
  • To increase students language skills in both listening and communicating.
  • To enhance the childrens’ creative skills and enjoyment through experiences with art materials, music, building and play.
  • To develop motor skills by practicing with many kinds of hands-on and interactive materials for fine motor and large motor development.

What parents should know about Miss Kim’s Classroom:  Miss Kim feels that creating a classroom that makes each individual student feel important is the key to being an effective educator across the curriculum. She makes sure that weekly lesson plans are enriched with activities that give children choices. Each child learns at a different level and in different ways and she works hard to discover the key to helping them each succeed.

What do children seem to enjoy most about Miss Kim’s classroom:

  • Journals – every week, they do a variety of writing activities: letter writing, word writing, sentence writing, graphing, science experiments, which involve predictions and drawings.
  • Independence to choose what activities they would like to do during work time, which may include bringing items from home to share with their friends.
  • Cooking projects
  • Group games

What are the favorite toys and activities in the classroom: scooters, balls (all kinds), matchbox cars and tracks to race them on, building blocks, magnetics, puzzles, coloring, cutting and gluing.

What else should parents know about Miss Kim? Miss Kim loves to have fun and laugh.  She uses both of these favorite things to enhance her teaching strategy.

Your holidays will always smell delicious!

1/2 C cinnamon
1 C applesauce
1 TBS. nutmeg
1 TBS. ground cloves
1 TBS. white glue
Plastic straw
Ribbon

In a bowl, combine cinnamon, applesauce, nutmeg, ground cloves and glue.  Mix well, until stiff dough forms. Roll out dough to 1/4″ thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut dough. Using the end of a straw poke a hole in one side of each ornament for the ribbon to go through. Carefully place cut out shapes on wire rack. Let ornaments air dry for 7 days, turning occassionally. When ornaments are completely hardened, thread ribbon through the hole and tie a loop so the ornament may hang.
